2006 - 2007 Scholarships

For more information on any of the following scholarships, students should go to the counseling center and check the scholarship folder, or see Ms. Boster. All scholarships are in chronological order according to their deadlines.



CFHS Music Booster Scholarship
Graduating CFHS senior band or color guard members who plan to continue their interest in music in a college music program are eligible to win one of two $500 awards payable to the educational institution they attend next year. The award is not based upon financial need. The deadline is April 24.

Fredericksburg Host Lioness Club Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student from a Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania or Stafford high school who will attend college next year and can demonstrate financial need and pursue a career associated with sight and/or hearing or other health related fields. The scholarship will be paid to the college in two increments of $500 per freshman semester. All completed applications must be received by April 24.

Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship
The Virginia Beta Beta chapter of ADK International Honorary Teacher’s Sorority for Women Educators will award a minimum $100 scholarship to a senior who plans to pursue post-secondary education in preparation to enter the teaching profession. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of character, scholarship, academics and desire to teach. Applications must be turned in to Ms. Boster by April 25.

Maryann Bensman Education Scholarship
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating CFHS senior who plans to major in education at an accredited college or university. Applications are available in the guidance office. The deadline is April 26.

Aquia Evening Lions Club
Two $500 scholarships are available to Stafford County seniors graduating this spring who plan to enter a full-time course of study in a service-oriented field. Extra-curricular and community activities, volunteer work, and honors and awards, career goals, and financial need will be considered. Applications must be postmarked by April 27, 2007.

CFHS Athletic Booster Scholarship
The CFHS Athletic Booster Club is offering up to six $500 scholarships—three each for graduating male and female athletes—payable to the educational institutions they will attend next year. To qualify, students must be accepted into a college, university or trade school, have lettered in at least one sport at CFHS, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have a parent or guardian who is a current member of the CFHS Athletic Booster Club by March 31, 2007. Extracurricular and community activities will also be considered. Applications are available in the guidance office. The deadline is April 27.

Merel K. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship
A graduating senior who has played at least one year of high school football in the Rappahannock Valley Football Officials Association is eligible to win a $1,500 scholarship. Students do not need to play football in college. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate academic, extracurricular, and community achievements, and must complete a 500-word essay explaining, “What the game of high school has taught me as a student-athlete, an individual and a teammate.” All applications must be postmarked by April 27.

PTSO College-Bound Scholarship
Graduating seniors who will continue their education at an accredited college or university are eligible to win awards of up to $1,000 from the CFHS Parent-Teacher-Student Association. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be able to demonstrate an overall enthusiasm for completing their next educational milestone. Scholarships will be based upon academic achievement, personal character, extracurricular activities, and evidence of exceptional service to the school and local community. Applicants must also be members of the PTSO by March 31st. The award will be paid directly to the educational institution. The deadline is 3:00 p.m. on April 27.

PTSO Career/Trades Scholarship
Graduating seniors who plan to continue their education at an accredited career/trades educational institution are eligible to win awards of up to $1,000 from the CFHS Parent-Teacher-Student Association. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be able to demonstrate an overall enthusiasm for completing their next educational milestone. Scholarships will be based upon academic achievement, personal character, extracurricular activities, and evidence of exceptional service to the school and local community. Applicants must also be members of the PTSO. The award will be paid directly to the educational institution. The deadline is 3:00 p.m. on April 27.

Legacy of Life Essay Scholarship
Three graduating seniors from Virginia can win a first-place scholarship of $3,000 or one of two honorary scholarships of $1,000—payable to the educational institution he or she attends next year— for writing a persuasive essay of no more than 1,000 words on “Organ & Tissue Donation: Persuade Someone to Give the Gift of a Lifetime.” The essay may be fiction or non-fiction. The competition is sponsored by the Washington Regional Transplant Consortium, whose mission it is to encourage young people from all walks of life to be organ and tissue donors. FALSA Scholarship
The Fredericksburg Association for Legal Professionals is offering one $500 scholarship to an area senior who plans to continue his or her education in the legal field (legal secretary, paralegal, or legal assistant, court reporter, law degree, etc.). Candidates must have been accepted by an accredited institution of higher learning (college, business or law school), have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and can demonstrate leadership abilities. All applications must be received by April 30, 2007.

Rodney E. Thompson Memorial Scholarship
Honoring the legacy of a middle school math teacher and coach who taught in Stafford County for over 30 years, this scholarship of $500 is being offered to former students of Rodney E. Thompson Middle School who have a minimum 3.0 GPA, a strong performance or potential in leadership, participation in extracurricular activities, and no disciplinary record or suspensions. A 400-word essay is required. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2007.

The Alex Lynch Leo Memorial Scholarship
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from CFHS who is enrolled or awaiting approval of an application from an accredited undergraduate college or university, or community college. Student must show significant involvement in a school sports activity for at least two years, and involvement in community service. See Mrs. Boster in guidance or Shelley Burt in the cafeteria for an application. The deadline is April 30, 2007.

The Nerissa Hackman Leo Memorial Scholarship
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from CFHS who is enrolled or awaiting approval of an application from an accredited undergraduate college or university, or community college. Student must show significant involvement in a Christian church and involvement in community service. See Mrs. Boster in guidance or Shelley Burt in the cafeteria for an application. The deadline is April 30, 2007.

American Legion Nurses’ Scholarship
High school seniors who are daughters or sons (and step-daughters and sons) of veterans who served in the Armed Forces, and who intend to pursue a career in nursing, are eligible to win the American Legion Nurses’ Scholarship. Applicants must be graduating seniors who intend to enter a two- or four-year educational institution in a nursing-related field. Financial need will be considered. Completed applications must be submitted to the local American Legion Unit President by May 1.

Communication Disorders Foundation High School Award
A $1,000 scholarship is available to a graduating senior who is hearing impaired and is pursuing an education beyond high school (vocational, college, and so on). Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications may be obtained by downloading them from their website at www.cdf-virginia.org/hs_scholarship.htm, or by emailing Janet W. Stack, chair of the CDF High School Award Committee, at jws8n@virginia.edu. All applications must be received by CDF by May 1.

Frank P. Moncure Lodge Scholarship Fund, Inc.
The Frank P. Moncure Lodge Scholarship Fund, Inc. will award a $500 scholarship to a qualified graduate of a Stafford County High School. Applications are available in guidance. See Mrs. Boster if you have questions. Deadline to apply is May 1, 2007.

Mary and Perry Thompson Scholarships
Students planning to attend college, graduate school or technical school training are eligible to win a scholarship based upon financial need. Other criteria judged will be character, intellect and submission of a Student Aid Report. All completed applications must be received by May 1.

Via Scholarship Program
Colonial Circuits, Inc. of Stafford County is offering a $2,500 scholarship to a college bound senior who plans to pursue a degree in mathematics, engineering, or physical sciences. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Applications are available in guidance. Deadline: May 1, 2007.

Virginia B. White Scholarship
Graduating seniors who are sons, daughters, grandchildren, or adopted dependents of veterans who served honorably in the military are eligible to win $500 payable to the educational institution they attend next year. The award will be made on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and financial need. An essay is also required. Applications are available in guidance. The deadline is May 1.

Walker-Grant Alumni Association
The Walker-Grant Alumni Association is offering two-$1,000 scholarships to seniors who are descendents of former Walker-Grant students attending from 1939-1968. In additon, the applicant must have a “C” average, be accepted by an accredited school, and demonstrate financial need. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2007.

Stafford Education Association Scholarship
SEA will offer $500 scholarships (one to each high school in Stafford) to a worthy graduating senior who will pursue a career in the field of education. If interested in applying, please see Mrs. Boster in guidance for an application. The deadline to apply is May 4, 2007.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Scholarship
The Tau Rho Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity will award $1,000 to an African-American male who has been accepted to a college and is in financial need. The applicant must have at least a "C" average. Extracurricular and scholastic activities will also be considered. Applications must be received by May 5, 2007.

Barry and Velma Berkey Scholarship for the Blind and Visually Impaired
The Berkey Scholarship will be awarded annually to a blind or visually impaired full-time student attending George Mason University. The student must major in one of the following careers: Art and Visual Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, Geography, History, Journalism, Music, Nursing, Physics, Psychology, Social Work, or Teaching. Carlton Dwayne Beach, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship of at least $500 will be awarded in memory of Carlton Dwayne Beach, Jr., a 2001 graduate of CFHS, who is remembered as being a Good Samaritan with a strong belief that with God all things are possible. To be eligible, students must be seniors planning on attending Germanna Community College for either a two- or four-year degree and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants will be evaluated based upon scholastic achievement, participation in any extra curricular school activities, volunteering in community service projects, belief in the work ethic, eagerness for continuing education, and financial need. Application deadline is May 12.

Fredericksburg Area Chapter, Virginia Tech Alumni Association
If you have been offered admission to Virginia Tech and plan to enter as a freshman in the fall of 2007, consider applying for a scholarship. The Fredericksburg Area Chapter, Virginia Tech Alumni Association will award up to seven $1,000 scholarships this year to learn particulars and access the interactive application form log on to www.fredericksburghokies.com.

Stafford County Farm Bureau Scholarships
Three $1,000 scholarships are available to students who meet the following criteria:
  • Stafford County Farm Bureau member, graduating from high school that will be attending a trade school, 2-yr. or 4-yr. institution of higher learning
  • Stafford County resident, graduating high school senior who will be attending a trade school, 2yr. or 4 yr. institution of higher learning, pursuing a career in an agriculture related field, and
  • Stafford County Farm Bureau member currently enrolled in a trade school, 2 yr. or 4 yr. institution of higher learning.

Stafford Baseball League Scholarship
One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior from each of Stafford County’s high schools that will be attending a college or university in the fall on a full-time basis. Either the high school athletic director or a varsity baseball coach must recommend students. In addition, students must have been a Stafford County high school varsity baseball team member for at least one year, and have been a Stafford Baseball League recreation team member for at least two seasons. Other rules, as well as an application, are available at www.staffordbaseball.org. Applications must be turned into Ms. Boster by May 18.

SunTrust Off To College Scholarship Sweepstakes
Scholarships worth $1,000 will be awarded every two weeks to students who register online with SunTrust – it ’s free to enter and eligibility is not based on GPA or financial need. Additionally, students will win a $250 SunTrust Gift card, and each winner’s the school of attendance will win $1,000 as well. There are 15 chances to win; the first drawing will take place on October 31, and additional drawings will take place every two weeks through May. Interested students should apply online at www.offtocollege.info.

Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation
At least 61 scholarships will be awarded to meritorious high school students with strong GPAs and ability test scores, as well as extra-curricular activities. Financial need will also be considered. Awards may be used at any accredited, post-secondary institution in the field of study of their choice. There is a fee for this application. The deadline is May 15, 2007.

Margaret Akers FBLA Scholarship
A $250 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating CFHS senior who plans to major in business at an accredited college or university. In addition the senior must be at least a two-year member of the FBLA and either a Business or Marketing program completer. Applications are available in guidance. The deadline is May 15, 2007.

Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship

STUDENTS CREATE THE IDEAL 21ST CENTURY LEARNING SPACE FOR A CHANCE TO WIN UP TO $10,000 IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY
Target and the American Architectural Foundation are pleased to present the Redesign Your School Contest for U.S. high school students in grades 9-12 who are age 13 or older. Working as an individual or in teams of two, students create the ideal 21st Century learning space design.

Entries can be in the form of drawings, model photos, video and more for a chance to win up to $10,000 in scholarship money and go to Washington, DC, to present their designs. Sharpe Community Scholars
The Sharpe Community Scholars program at the College of William and Mary invites every entering student to apply to the program and then selects approximately 75 freshmen to enroll in courses specifically designed to engage in community activism, research, or service.
